Rubithon 2000

3/27/01 Updated with some new pics from Chris Alger. Thanks again, Chris!

My late-night, early-morning trip report, written after getting home from Rubithon 2000. Wow!

This is one seriously narcissistic page! My excuse is that I didn't take any pictures during Rubithon, so all the pics my friends have shared with me have been of my FJ55. See links at the bottom for other Rubithon 2000 web pages.

Andy Plaine was kind enough to give me some pics of the pig on the 'con. I've scanned them and put them up here. Chris Alger took a lot of pics as well, and I recently got a gold CD from him, containing Rubithon pics. Thanks, guys!

There might be some more pics showing up from this trip, so check back.

Just starting out, cruising on the bare smooth granite of the bowl, not far from Loon Lake. If you click the second image, you'll see Jim Brantley's 60 in the foreground.

Got a little tippy on Walker Hill. Had the FJ55 resting on the driver-side nerf bar. My knee was in serious sewing machine mode! I just couldn't get enough bite with the right rear tire, even though the rear differential was locked. The left rear was in a hole. My front diff was open. Took a strap. (Thanks, Phil.)

That's Luke Porter in the Sand Spider on the slabs, me coming down the slabs too. Man that was scary! The pig was heavily loaded, the roof rack carried quite a bit of stuff, and I managed to lift both passenger-side tires at one point. Gah. I met up with Andy Plaine and his group at the bottom of the slabs. Andy snapped the last two picture as I took the pig for a swim through the pond at the bottom.

These are some pics from Big Sluice. To be honest, that day was so full of adrenalin and endorphin and over-my-head wheeling that now six months later, my significant memory of the day consists of that one sharp left-hand turn and the ensuing drop off the big boulder. My steering box was starting to bind, sure sign of its impending failure right before the springs.

Right before Rubicon Springs is the Rubicon Bridge. We posed the wagons and sat on the big dead tree spanning the river. That's Trevor, Andy and Ian Plaine, and me.

Here's a cool variation by J.R. Wright that uses a java applet to simulate the rolling Rubicon River. Neat!

The second pic is a silly pose on a log. Hey!

I got a little tippy trying to climb out of the side of this mud pit, heading toward the bottom of Cadillac Hill. I think it's called the Alligator Pit. Man, I need bigger tires and better articulation! Eventually five guys got on my right side rocker panels to help me balance, as I slowly backed down. Andy Plaine found a perfectly mellow route around the pit, and I took that.

Chris Alger got the second shot somewhere on Cadillac Hill. That is my favorite picture from the trip. It looks like a Toyota ad from the '70s. :-)

Hanging out at Lookout Point, after the climb up Cadillac Hill.

After we climbed Cadillac, the roads were relatively tame, and I think we all shifted into 4-hi for most of it. The sensation of going 20-25mph after three days of crawling was a sensation of speed! It felt like we were tearing along at a great speed. We crossed a little creek, and ended up staying a while and hitting it at speed a couple times. Pigs do fly!
