I posted here about a problem I was having with a fast ticking sound. Several of you diagnosed it as probably an exhaust leak. Mudrak said it would be the EGR pipe where it enters the exhaust manifold near the firewall, and using the rubber-hose-stethoscope trick I determined he was right.

Originally I was going to just remove the pipe from the cooler, pull it out and make sure the mating surface of the pipe & flange was level and undamaged. Let me tell you, removing the EGR mechanism is a pain! I tried getting the smog pump, ABV and hoses clear, but still couldn't drag it out without removing the exhaust & intake, and I couldn't get a ~35mm wrench on the locknut for the pipe at the cooler. So instead I'm just going to replace the gasket with the EGR mechanism in-place. Can you tell me if the top of the EGR pipe and the bottom of the manifold look good enough to just R&R the gasket?

Here are some pics from the last time I removed the whole system. I wanted to get the entire pipe out, because Mudrak thought the flange was bent. I couldn't get the compression nut at the rear of the cooler box off the pipe, so I tried removing the box and pipe as a unit. But the '76 CA exhaust manifold goes waaaay down past the top of the oil pan, and that made it really hard to get the pipe and box out together. I eventually used a giant breaker bar and a friction pipe wrench (the kind with a chain) to get it off. What a pain in the ass.

What's got me a little worried is that I put a brand new Toyota gasket in this mount point just 3000 miles ago, and look at what's left of it!

Compared to a hefty new one, it's wafer thin:

Why would a Toyota EGR pipe gasket self-destruct in 3000 miles?

P.S. If you've been curious about POR's manifold paint, that's what it looks like after 1 year / 3000 miles.
