FJ55 adapted to use Minitruck PS

by Steve Helmreich

Here are three pictures showing a power steering box mount and shock tower for a '76 FJ-55 Land Cruiser. The mount is designed to use a solid axle Toyota 4x4 minitruck '79-'85 steering box.

The first picture shows the pieces, with the torched-off FJ-55 shock tower from the passenger's side of a parts truck. (Many people use F-250 or some generic shock tower, but I had this one handy). The grinding marks are prep for welding.

The other piece in the first picture is a section of I-channel with the bottom leg of the I cut off. It's drilled in 5 places for the frame mount, and four places for the box mount. The gussets await welding.

The second picture shows the assembled and sandblasted mount, from the bottom up.
The third picture shows it in place on the truck. I cut away the bottom corner of the I-channel to clear the pitman arm and joint as they swing back during steering. The box just clears the shock tower and inner fender, which interfered by only 1/8" or so. The steering box input shaft plugs right into the intermediate shaft, and I reused the original heat shield to protect the new power steering box from the nearby exhaust manifold.

I have no plans to produce these for commercial sale, nor do I accept any liability for anything anyone does with these ideas/pictures.
