DATDR '00

Hollister Hills ORV, CA, 11/24/00

I think Eric Stegall said this was the fourth year of the unofficial Day After Turkey Day Run. (DATDR) A bunch of off-roaders congregate at Hollister Hills SVRA, cruisers included. Mark Warner and I drove down in two FJ55s this year. We hooked up with a bunch of friends and just goofed around. Here are some pics.

Airing down at the old schoolhouse. In this pic are Joe Somerville, Scott Gemmett, Roger Brown, Mark Warner, that's my FJ55 on the right.

Somehow we always end up at the playground. It's a parking lot in this shot, but what you can't see is the mini-rubicon, the rock piles, mud pit, fake waterfall, teeter-totter, etc. The two FJ60s L-R in the foreground are Jon Kuhry's and Tom Boyd's, then you see Brian Sullivan's FJ60, Joe Somerville's FJ55, Roy Marcum's FJ40 and Jimmy Miller's FJ40. People are Tom Boyd, Joe Somerville, Roy Marcum, (some guy), Camo Bill, John Stone, and then all the way to the right, Jimmy Miller and the Missus, Trevor & Andy Plaine.

While we were at the playground, we saw these shiny new Humvees goofing around. This black one drove straight into the mud pit and stopped, stuck. Tom Boyd (Das Beast) to the rescue! Yes, this was a photo op if there ever was one.

After the playground we headed to the (dried) mud pit. At this point it's a big bowl with interesting climbs.

I think that's John Stone driving my FJ55 out of the pit. Scott Gemmett heading up one of the holier climbs
He has found a hole! Let's see that again. Ian helped tip him onto four wheels, and Scott drove back down slowly. Here's a pic from Tom Boyd, taken from the other side of the pit.

Ian Plaine (blue 40), Ian's friend (red 40) and Roy Marcum were coming up Bill's Way, and both Ian and his friend managed to stuff and nearly tip their 40s in the same culvert. On purpose, eh? It was fun to watch. Ian drove out of his predicament onto four wheels, Roy yanked the red 40 out of that hole.

After they came through Bill's Way, we went through the other way. I had John Stone and his friend Jared (sp?) in my FJ55. I can't remember if I was trying to scare them or scare myself, but I got the pig almost on its side. But for Butch's awesome nerfs, it would have been over on sheet metal. A backwards tug from Brian Sullivan and I was good to go. Ha! (Thanks Tom Boyd for the pics.)

Here's a 360-degree panorama from the top. It was crowded up there! It was a hazy day, but on a clear day it's a really pretty view. If you look closely, you can see Mark Warner (baseball cap) walking left in three frames.

I followed Tom Boyd up a shale-lined and steep spur off Fremontia, on the way up. I'd always been too chickenshit to try it, but I figured if he was doing it, I could follow him. Plus, I could always run a strap forward to him. Damn if the pig didn't just grunt its way up the steep shale with no trouble! I love what you do for me, Toyota.

Dogs and cruisers, good combo. That's B2, Joe Somerville's two-year-old lab.

Eric Stegall took us up this little creek trail. I'd never been on it before. What a blast! Super twisty, rolling terrain, sides of the trail often even with the roofline, lots of crazy off-camber stuff. Think "Hobbit Land". Joe Somerville and Tien Do were in the truck with me at this point. That was fun!

After the creekbed, I let Joe Somerville drive my truck. We played around in a mud pit, then headed out for the day.

Whoa Nellie! Tom at warp speed in the mud Smile!
Eric showed us some 2WD V6 power as he planed across the mud. Tom charged it with 36" swapers buzzing through the mud. I kind of wound to a near halt but made it through at high RPMS with 33s, then went back and crawled through at 105:1 with no mud flying, and except the climb out no slippage. Going fast was more fun tho.

Just before quitting time, Mark, Joe and I posed the FJ55s together. Thanks to Joe Somerville for the pics.
