I decided to add a snorkel for a couple of reasons. The first is
because I could not proceed on a trail on the Carson River due to
deep water, and I didn't want that to happen again. The second
reason was to substitute the extra large factory air box for a
smaller one, thus making room for an on-board, belt-driven air
compressor.
I originally built the snorkel by moving the stock airbox to the
roof rack. I then used 3" flexible hose and 3" black PVC
pipe to connect it to the carb. I just slipped the flex hose right
over the opening of the carb and used a hose clamp to hold it. This
was good enough to let me put in the air compressor. I then redid
the setup.
After much searching I decided to use an air box from an '89 Mitsu
Montero with the V-6 fuel-injected motor. It was the right size and
had the intake and exhaust in the right places. Also Mitsubishi
uses a lot of rubber hose in their vehicles that has the right
diameter (approx. 3") to fit the PVC pipe and the top of the
TLC carb. I used the tubes from a Montero and from a Mitsubishi van
that looked similar to a newer VW. The montero tube went from the
side of the air box (intake) to the black PVC pipe entering the
engine compartment. I used the 90-dergree hose from the van to come
off the top of the carb and connected it to a mystery 90-degree
rubber hose I found in a '55 I bought for parts. I believe it came
off a late '80s or early '90s Chrysler passenger car. I had to trim
this part a little bit, too.
For the scoop, I originally tried to buy the ARB scoop but could
not find anyone who would sell the scoop only. (What happens if
you break your scoop and/or lose it? Will ARB not sell you a
replacement?) Anyway, I decided I would just make a metal one and I
had a sheet metal shop build one for under $50. I added the grate
later. It came off the front of a Suzuki Slammeri. :-) I plan on
piping my fuel pump breather holes, distributor, axles and
transmission/transfer case into this system too. I want to be able
to submerge the cruiser in water up to mid-windshield deep. (maybe
a diesel conversion in the future) I hope this helps somebody, at
least I had fune. :-)
